Living in Spain for the past eight years has given me the chance to explore this amazing country in ways that I never expected. From wandering the lively streets of Madrid to uncovering the charm of places like Granada and Valencia, I’ve fallen in love with the variety and unique character each destination offers. While there are many places that reveal the true heart of Spain, a few well-known spots have left a particularly lasting impression on me. In this two-part series, I’m excited to share some of my favorite destinations—starting with five cities that offer a perfect introduction for first-time visitors, or deeper experiences for those returning to Spain.

Madrid: The City That Stole My Heart

Personal Experience: Madrid is where my love affair with Spain began. After living here for the past eight years, this city has become my second home. When I first arrived in Madrid, I wasn’t really into art or history. But after visiting museums like the Prado, exploring the Royal Palace, and taking guided walking tours, I began to appreciate how art tells the many stories of Spanish history. These experiences taught me to see the city in a new light. Once you understand a bit of the history, every neighborhood takes on more meaning—each barrio with its own distinct character, from the bohemian vibe of Malasaña to the literary charm of Las Letras, where the streets are named after famous Spanish writers.

What sets Madrid apart is how walkable it is. I love wandering through the streets with no particular plan in mind. I can spend hours strolling through the elegant streets of Salamanca, window-shopping and stopping at local cafés. The Mercado de la Paz in Salamanca is one of my go-tos for an authentic food experience, far from the tourist crowds. One of my favorite discoveries here is Casa Dani, where you’ll find the best tortilla española in the city.

Local Tip: If you want to eat like a true Madrileño, head to Casa Dani in Mercado de la Paz for their famous tortilla. It’s a local favorite and much more authentic than what you’ll find at the more touristy markets.

Barcelona: A Fusion of Art and Architecture

Personal Experience: Every time I visit Barcelona, I find myself marveling at its architectural wonders and artistic spirit. The first time I stood in front of Sagrada Família, I was speechless—it almost didn’t look real. Gaudí’s influence is all over the city, from the  Park Güell to the stunning Casa Batlló.

Beyond the tourist landmarks, Barcelona is an international city that pulses with energy. I love wandering through the Gothic Quarter with its narrow medieval streets, where each corner seems to hold a hidden piece of history. But my favorite moments are spent by the sea at Barceloneta Beach, where the combination of city life and coastal relaxation comes together perfectly.

Local Tip: Avoid the mid-day rush at the Sagrada Família and opt for an early morning visit, followed by a leisurely coffee in a nearby café. If you’re in Barcelona during the summer, Barceloneta Beach at sunset is the perfect way to end your day.

Seville: A Taste of Andalusian Culture

Personal Experience: Seville is a city that exudes pride and history at every turn. One of my most memorable experiences was visiting the Plaza de España, an architectural masterpiece built for the 1929 World’s Fair. Standing in the grand, semi-circular plaza with its intricate tile work and sweeping views, it feels like you’ve gone back in time. The entire city reflects a deep connection to its past, but what I love most about Seville is the pace of life. Unlike some of Spain’s bigger cities, Seville embraces a slower, more relaxed rhythm. The locals here are deeply proud of their city, and you can feel it in every interaction—whether it’s a friendly chat in a café or a leisurely stroll through the Santa Cruz neighborhood.

Seville’s charm is in its details: the scent of orange blossoms, the sound of horse-drawn carriages, and the beautiful fusion of Moorish and Spanish architecture. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and truly take in the atmosphere.

Local Tip: If you’re looking to try a traditional Sevillian dish, go for espinacas con garbanzos (spinach with chickpeas). For the best experience, visit El Rinconcillo, a historic bar that’s been serving locals since 1670. It’s the perfect place to enjoy this hearty dish and soak in the city’s rich history.

Granada: The Majesty of the Alhambra

Personal Experience: Granada is one of those cities that stays with you long after you leave. The first time I visited the Alhambra, I was so mesmerized by its beauty that I jokingly told my dad I wanted to get married there. He laughed and said, “Okay, sure,” knowing full well I’d probably have to be part of the royal family for that to happen! But honestly, the Alhambra is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen, with its intricate architecture and serene gardens. The memory of standing at the Mirador de San Nicolás at sunset, with the Alhambra glowing against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains, is something I’ll carry with me forever.

Beyond the Alhambra, the Albayzín district is another treasure. Its narrow, winding streets and stunning views of the Alhambra make it one of the most picturesque neighborhoods I’ve ever wandered through. I love getting lost in its maze-like alleys, stumbling upon hidden plazas or cozy spots to enjoy a drink. There’s a magical blend of history and everyday life here that makes it feel truly special.

Local Tip: For an unforgettable experience, catch a flamenco show in one of the caves in the Barrio Sacromonte. The intimacy and passion of flamenco in such a unique setting is something you will never forget.

Valencia: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Personal Experience: Valencia is a city that effortlessly blends the old with the new. One of the things I love most is how you can spend your morning exploring the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences with its cutting-edge architecture, and by afternoon, find yourself wandering through the charming, historic city center with its traditional markets and narrow streets.

What also makes Valencia special are its warm Mediterranean waters. The coastline is the perfect place to relax, especially in the summer when the beaches offer a welcome escape from the city. But for me, one of the best experiences Valencia offers is its rice dishes, particularly the famous paella. Instead of heading to the busy beachside restaurants, I recommend venturing to one of the small villages near L’Albufera, where the rice fields surround the area. Here, you’ll find more authentic versions of paella, made with local ingredients and tradition in mind.

Local Tip: For an authentic paella experience, head to the villages near L’Albufera. This is where you’ll find the real flavors of Valencia’s most famous dish, served in a peaceful, rural setting.
